Coping (2022)
This series is a personal reflection of the experience of abiding by the mandatory regulation of wearing face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Wearing face masks while in public spaces was essential to the fight against the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic. However, this mandate posed its challenges. The simple act of breathing was not so simple anymore, especially in instances involving heightened physical activity. Such an instance for me was brisk walking on the crowded streets of Nairobi CBD during rush hour. Those wearing glasses (like myself) had to deal with them fogging up, especially when moving between environments with contrasting temperatures. During the pandemic, I felt I had to assimilate to the feeling of being chained to my mask. Despite the burdensome experience of wearing masks, they progressively became perceived as fashion accessories. People styled and matched them with their outfits or personalities. Even corporations included masks as part of their corporate visual identities, branding them with their respective logos and colours. With this collection of work, I celebrate resilience. Despite the difficulty experienced during the pandemic, we emerged on the other side, having embraced its hardship. Coping, making the most of the tough times.
Coping (2024): Recollections and coping strategies during COVID (Experimental video)
This ongoing video work is an invitation for others to expand the dialogue started in Coping (2022). Through a Google form, people submit recollections and coping strategies they used during COVID. The responses are then transformed into video format. In Coping (2022), I reflected on my experience of abiding by the mandatory regulation of wearing face masks in public spaces. I coped by embracing face masks as an accessory; I always went for black face masks. I am interested in broadening the perspective of the work to beyond myself, to make the work more inclusive.
